Drug Interactions With Generic Adalat

Generic Adalat belongs to a group of medicines called calcium channel blockers and is used in the treatment of hypertension or high blood pressure, chest pain, and irregular heartbeats. However, just as it is the case with other medications, there can be potentially negative interactions when Adalat is combined with some of the drugs. Some of the drug interactions with Adalat may alter the levels of the drugs and also metabolize the drugs in a different manner. Some of the drug interactions may increase the risk of side effects and may cause congestive heart failure, hypotension, bleeding etc. Although, it may not be possible to cover the entire list of medications that may have drug interactions with Adalat, some of them are listed below.

Antifungals and antibiotics - Taking Adalat CC with antibiotics or antifungals may increase the levels of Adalat in your blood, thereby increasing side effects. They include: - Miconazole

- Clarithromycin

- Isoniazid

- Ketoconazole

Beta blockers - When Adalat is combined with a beta blocker, the side effects may include hypotension and congestive heart failure. They include:

- Carvedilol

- Atenolol

- Metoprolol

- Bisoprolol

- Nadolol

- Propranolol

- Timolol

- Sotalol

Cimetidine (Tagamet) - Cimetidine may cause an increase in the levels of Adalat in your blood, thereby increasing the side effects of Adalat.

Digoxin (Lanoxin) - Taking Adalat CC may increase the digoxin levels in the blood and this can be very dangerous. The digoxin levels should be monitored by your healthcare provider and the digoxin dosage should be readjusted if needed.

Nefazodone (Serzone)-Nefazodone may increase the levels of Adalat in your blood and thereby increase the side effects as well.

Protease Inhibitors - When protease inhibitors are taken along with Adalat, the levels of Adalat in your blood may increase. This will increase the side effects of Adalat. They include:

- Atazanavir

- Amprenavir

- Fosamprenavir

- Indinavir

- Ritonavir

- Nelfinavir

Quinidine - Adalat may actually decrease the quinidine levels in your blood, thereby making it less effective. The Adalat levels in your blood may be increased due to the presence of quinidine.

Rifamycin derivatives - These can greatly reduce the Adalat levels in your blood and make it less effective. Hence, combining Adalat CC with rifamycin derivatives is not recommended. They include:

- Rifampin

- Rifabutin

- Rifapentine

Seizure medications - The levels of Adalat in the blood will be greatly reduced if it is taken together with seizure medications. They include:

- Phenytoin

- Carbamazepine

- Phenobarbital

St. Johns Wort - This can actually reduce the levels of Adalat in your blood and make it less effective.

Tacrolimus (Prograf) - Taking Adalat can increase the tacrolimus levels in your blood and thereby increase the risk of side effects.

Warfarin (Coumadin) - It may increase risk of bleeding if you are on warfarin. Hence, the healthcare provider has to monitor closely while starting or stopping Adalat.

There is a possibility that all drug interactions may not have been discussed in this article. Hence, you should discuss with your healthcare provider or pharmacist about the possible drug interactions with Adalat, prior to taking the medication.
